Salle des machines. Un des deux moteurs.
Engine room. One of the two engines.
Sound track : one engine running
In English, a ship is feminine, she. In French, a ship is masculine-neutral, il, it ! The machine is neutral in English but feminine in French, la machine. Try to understand something !
The engine room is concentrated power ! The Ciudad de Cadiz is propelled by two 8 cylinders MAN L32/40 engines, fueled with raw oil. To have an idea of the size of the engine, 32 cm is the diameter of the cylinders and 40 cm, the stroke. Half a cubic-meter in total, 8000 KW, more than 10000 horsepower. The two engines run at a constant speed, 750 rpm. They drive two constant speed, 200 rpm, 4 variable pitch blades, contrarotating propellers. The command form the deck is the pitch angle of the blades of each propeller. The engines adjust power automatically to stay at 750 rpm. The speed of the boat is also driven by the propeller pitch angle.
There is something similar between the engine of the Ciudad de Cadiz and the laser of aeolus. They have about the same peak power, 4 MW. However, while the average power of the engine of the ship is still 4 MW, the average power of the laser of aeolus is 4 W only … if I am calculating right !!!
